Courses for Younger People (14-16-year-olds)

Step Up Programme

Our programme for 14-16-year-olds is called Step Up (Skills Towards Enabling Progression) and offers a supportive and structured environment where young people can rebuild confidence and re-engage with learning. It is designed for those who may have struggled in traditional secondary schools, providing a fresh start focused on their strengths, interests and future goals.

With personalised support, smaller class sizes and dedicated staff, learners receive the guidance and encouragement they need to overcome challenges and succeed. Alongside academic progress, the programme also develops key life skills such as resilience, communication and independence. Step Up helps young people unlock their potential and prepares them for further education, training or an apprenticeship.

We understand that everyone's journey is different, so we focus on meeting the young person where they are and helping them take the next steps toward a more positive and independent future.

Programme at a Glance

Running from September to June, the programme combines a maximum of 1.5 days a week (or 2 days a week if they are undertaking Functional Skills English and maths) and engaging classroom learning, giving learners the tools they need for both academic and personal growth. This differs significantly from more traditional courses, which often expect full-time or near full-time commitment. Step Up isn’t just about qualifications – it’s about believing in yourself, finding your strengths and stepping confidently into your future. Here, every learner is supported, encouraged and given the chance to shine.

Throughout the academic year, on our Step Up programme, learners will get the opportunity to:

Achieve up to three nationally recognised qualifications (depending on attendance)

Learners will get the opportunity to obtain their Ascentis L1 award or certificate in Skills Towards Enabling Progressions (Step Up), L1 Resilience and Grit and L1 Managing Transitions - all of which equip learners to navigate changes and plan for the future with clarity and confidence.

Take part in lessons that will prepare them for 'what's out there'

Every week, learners take part in Employability Skills lessons and Personal Social Development sessions, empowering them with the practical skills and self-awareness that extend far beyond the classroom.

Get one step ahead and accelerate their learning

Optional Functional Skills lessons in English and maths are also available, giving learners the chance to strengthen these essential skills at their own pace.

Learners complete a 37-week course which is a blend of classroom based learning and trips off site. Learners will be required to attend from September to June for 1.5 days a week (or 2 days a week if they are undertaking Functional Skills English and maths).

Class sizes are between 15-16 learners depending on the level of the group.

All learners carry out initial assessments to ensure that they are working towards the correct level for their ability. Assessments and exams are arranged when the tutor and learner feel that they are exam ready to give them the best opportunity to achieve.

To be eligible for this course, learners must be in Year 10 and Year 11 at school (14-16 years-old).

Learners have access to a wide range of support including access to the Learner Support Workers (LSW) and safeguarding team. If a learner is a child in care or care leaver, we work closely with The Virtual School and Social Care team to ensure that they are fully supported while on the programme. Learners that have an EHCP will be fully supported by the team including the SENCo.
